Buttercup Cottage | Welcome Book
As part of updating and perfecting Buttercup Cottage to be the best holiday cottage we have created a visitor pack highlighting information about the cottage and the surrounding Casteton & Peak District area. We will be sending this to all of our guests and this document will be continually changing.... for example we have just installed Sky Glass and Sky Stream in the living room, kitchen and Buttercup bedroom:
Buttercup Cottage Castleton Holiday Guide
Thank you so much for booking your stay at Buttercup, we truly hope you have an amazing time! We have pulled this document together to highlight aspects of the cottage, the area, lots of do’s and a few don’t. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact Sykes on 012443 45700 or Edward during or after your stay on 07772 572 410.
We have a new website https://buttercup-cottage-castleton.co.uk/that has further information as well as the ability to send us your memories/photos etc so that we can share them with others. You will find our blog where we share some of our favourite walks, restaurants and plenty of photos of our dogs, (we’re not great at selfies!).
Please enjoy Buttercup and we hope to see you again soon!
Best, Edward & Mark Roberts.
Getting to Buttercup
From the A6187 which is the main road through the centre of Castleton turn into Castle Street towards Market Place where the Castle Inn is on the corner and opposite the Bulls Head.
At the end turn right into the narrow lane called The Stones passing the chip shop on your left. This road is heavily pedestrianised so please drive carefully. You will notice a few unofficial signs saying “No entry to the Peak Cavern”, these are placed to reduce the amount of car throughput.
Go down the dip and cross the bridge over the river and climb the hill straight ahead that bends to the left.
You will come to a small green on the left called Goose Hill Green and Buttercup Cottage is opposite on your right. We have placed “residents parking” signs outside and if you have come in 2 compact cars you maybe able to fit both outside. Please avoid parking outside other residents property. There is tall dry stone wall on the bend on Goosehill which you can use to park but be careful particularly on Wednesday bin day as it is tight for the lorries.
Arrival
On the right of the door you will see a key box, (please call for code if you have lost it), obtain the key and close the box. The door is on a latch so please be careful when.
To immediately de-stress we always drop our bags on arrival, walk into the garden and take in the almost 360 degree view of the peaks and look for the Peveril Castle turret peaking above the trees.
Facilities and the cottage
You will find a little treat inside for you and a furry friend if you have brought one on us to help you settle in, plenty of tea/coffee and a Nespresso machine for a morning caffeine fix. You will find the dishwasher where there are a couple of tablets under the sink. You will also find surface sprays, cloths, liquid for washing clothes and conditioner.
There’s a herbs and spices rack and we try and supply oil, salt, pepper.
Outside there is a tap to clean muddy paws and boots.
There is a compact Shark hoover in the Kitchen if you fancy a quick spruce during your stay; it is certainly not our expectation that you leave Buttercup spotless when you leave; Buttercup Cottage is about relaxing!
In the bathroom upstairs you’ll find bleach and air fresheners and supply of toilet roll.
We stay at Buttercup as much as we can so have tried to stock the home with as many comforts as possible. In the main living room you will find a guide we and previous owners have made, enough wood to make a fire or 2, as well as numerous DVD’s and games. In the dining room you will find a HiFi for CD’s and an aux to plug in your own music; don’t forget to try and find the ancient heart shaped quartz in the wall that was found under the floor during renovation!
We have provided some hair and body shower gel in case you have forgotten.
Towels
There are ample towels supplied, in an effort to reduce environmental concerns please leave the towels you have used in a slightly messy fashion; any untouched/unused towels in a pile to avoid unnecessary washing.
Cleaners
Our cleaners are on hand and have helped guests on occasion, Lynne can be contacted on 07778 234 921.
Stocking up
There is a little shop in Castleton just after the S-bend as you go out towards Hope. There is also a small Spar in Hope, (near the Curry Cabin!). A larger Co-Op can be found in Bradwell Netherside.
We supply enough firewood for a fire or 2, this can be expensive to supply if people want 2 fires on every evening; you can restock at petrol stations or the Co-Op in Bradwell.
WIFI
You fill find the Vodafone Hub in Dining Room, the network name and password is on the back.
TV - Sky Stream
There are 3 TV’s throughout the house all have Sky Stream. As result you have hundreds of channels as well as Netflix. There is also an Amazon firestick, feel free to log in if you wish to use your own profile but please log out when you leave to make sure people don't use your profile!
Bins
Bin day is on Wednesday, please recycle items and place in the Green bin, Black bin for everything else.
Neighbours
We have some wonderful neighbours who can help out if needed, one of them keeps a key on hand just in case you get locked out; please contact us if you have any problems. Bear in mind that Goosehill and the area is very quiet particularly at night, noise travels at night so please keep this in mind when in the garden. Please try and smoke at the top of the garden and keep the BBQ up there rather than in the patio area.
Please clean up after your dog; its never pleasant picking up another dogs treasures and its not great finding treasures amongst bedding when doing maintenance.
Castleton Favourites
Pub – The Castle – An old traditional pub with and extensive food and drink menu, and a beautiful beer garden with stunning views to Mam Tor. Inside you’ll find 3 excellent dining areas each with their own character.
Café – Peveril Tearooms – Peppered steak slice puts well known bakery brands to shame and will fuel any long walk, we also buy them for friends when coming home! Dolly’s Tea rooms for sandwiches and cake.
Cave – The Devil’s Arse – Situated less than 2 minutes away is the largest natural cave entrance in the British Isles. There are regular concerts and special events that run throughout the year so make sure to check if there is anything on during your stay.
The Little Shop and the Carlton Emporium, for trinkets and keepsakes 30m from the cottage close to the streams; the latter of which is worth it to meet the charismatic owner alone!
Takeaway – Castleton Fish & Chips offers very reasonable meal deals and excellent fish. If you enjoy a curry the Curry Cabin in Hope is excellent and also offers Bring your own drinks for dine in, making any evening very reasonable.
Restaurant– 1530 – Offering traditional and modern Italian cuisine run by Tim and Alicia, a real Italian treat. Personal favourites include the Beef ragu pasta or the meaty Valley Fest pizza. They also takeaway.
Winnat’s Pass
You must drive or walk up Winnat’s Pass. Once through turn right towards Mam Tor then another right over the top of Mam Tor. You will then wind back round to the left and down following the valley. Keep driving through towards Hope, make a stop at the Cheshire Cheese Inn! The road comes out at Hope.
Walk – Walking 20 to 30 meters south-east out of the small marketplace in front of the castle, you’ll find a small entrance way to the Cave Dale walking path which will take you behind the castle ruins. Once you go up the ravine you will reach a small disused gate, take a right just before and this will bring you back right in front of the cottage. It was recently used as a filming location for the Game of Thrones spin-off, House of the Dragon and is quite simply our favourite walk in the area.
However, if you are looking for a more challenging route, you can walk to the summit of the famous 517m tall Mam Tor, along the ridge to Losehill; but please allow for a couple of hours, some drinks and supplies to do this! You can take the ridge in 2 parts with plenty of paths down to Castleton to explore.
Further Afield
In the kitchen you will see a painting of the Peak District and some of the main attractions… we are yet to tick everything off but it’s a handy guide and pointer to places we have been.
Cressbrook and the Monsal Trail.
If you head over to Monsal Head you will find the most amazing view over the viaduct and onto the river that meanders towards Cressbrook. If you put Monsal Head Hotel into your satnav there is a public parking across the road; its quite small though so might be a struggle to park in peak periods. There’s a couple of benches there and also a nice little café called Hobb’s which serves great sandwiches and also an elevated small garden area.
Stepping Stones near Ashbourne
A beautiful walk that follows a river then over the famous stepping stones. This is a National Trust area so does need paying for on arrival to park etc but its worth it! Dog’s need to be on leads though throughout.
Padley Gorge
This place is amazing! We have stopped here numerous times on the way to the M1, to tire the dogs for the car journey and take in this unique place! There is plenty of public and roadside parking and we thoroughly recommend walking both sides of the river. If you are familiar with Lord of the Rings, it has that feel, mossy trees and a very earie atmosphere complete with waterfalls. Very close by are also Millstone Edge and Lawrencefield
The Ladybower and Snake’s pass
The Ladybower is a stunning man-made reservoir that offers many pubs and fantastic views as well as amazing walks all the way round. (this place is known for dodgy parking so watch out parking on the roadsides, you will get a ticket!). Snake’s Pass is well-known for its winding roads on the side of cliff edges and is a great drive over to Glossop. Half-way up there is a lovely little waterfall that we always stop at; there are also numerous laybys to stop at and ascend some steep hills and admire the views.
Parkhouse and Chromehill
Otherwise known as the Dragon’s Back due to its beautiful 3 peaks this is stunning quieter area that offers a few pubs and some stunning views. We once walked the 3 peaks, its rather steep and slightly scary but you’re able to walk round for an easier time! If you zoom in you’ll see our friend Alex scaling down; clearly Buddy isn’t shaken by heights!
