The George - 3 mins walk

Our Unique Take:

Tucked just around the corner on Castle Street, The George is the closest pub to our cottage. It sits happily away from the bustling main road, resting right beneath the dramatic slopes of Peveril Castle. It features a brilliantly converted horsebox out back known as the PizzaBox, serving freshly baked pizzas alongside their standard pub kitchen menu. The lunch menu is great, offering baguettes and soup whilst the main menu is proper pub food that changes relatively frequently. A personal highlight was when Syd ordered the Sheppard’s pie Welsh rarebit!  It has a lovely outside frontage and a rear garden that tends to be quieter. A firm favourite with locals particularly on a Tuesday night.

The Castle

Walking time from Buttercup Cottage: 4 minutes (approx. 300 yards down Castle Street)
The Vibe: Homely warmth, vintage character, and premium gins.

Our Unique Take: Part of the Vintage Inns family, we think this place offers the best garden with views of Peveril Castle and Mam Tor. It also features “Edward’s Bench” which is at the far side of the car park and people miss it, it has the best views!
They offer a wide range of food, but to be honest it’s a bit hit and miss. You must download the Vintage Inns app. We have eaten there the most as we sometimes get 50% off mains as well as free drinks on the loyalty app! We can definitely recommend the small plates, 3 for circa £12. Its interior features low ceilings, cosy nooks, and real open fires that feel incredibly welcoming on chilly Peak District afternoons. There are 3 dining areas to enjoy and the guys are very dog-friendly with a wealth of treats at the front door.

Ye Olde Nags Head

Walking time from Buttercup Cottage: 4 minutes (approx. 350 yards via Cross Street)
The Vibe: Bustling 17th-century coaching inn with traditional decor and fireplaces.

Our Unique Take:
Standing proudly at the main village junction, Ye Olde Nags Head has been welcoming tired travellers since the 1600s. There is a relatively small pub area and larger restaurant space on the corner.  Although not our preference they are heavily praised for their local cask ales but we can recommend the massive food portions including a legendary bangers and mash menu. The burgers are absolute towers too! It’s highly dog-friendly too, meaning your four-legged friends can curl up by the fire right with you.

The Bulls Head

Walking time from Buttercup Cottage: 4 minutes (approx. 350 yards via Cross Street)
The Vibe: Classic pub fare in traditional surroundings with a modern feel

Our Unique Take: Located opposite The Castle, the Bulls Head is a beautifully refurbished, oak-beamed traditional house. During the summer months, it is easily one of the most popular spots in the village thanks to its outdoor benches at the back of the pub over-looking Mam Tor and a sheep field over the dry stone wall. It is the perfect spot to sit out in the sunshine, enjoy a cold drink, and watch the world go by. Inside, you'll find impeccably high-standard decor and plenty of free treats waiting at the bar for your dog. The food is great, certainly recommend their mid-week menus such as Fish and Chip Tuesday and the Steak baguette is a winner.

The Peak Hotel

Walking time from Buttercup Cottage: 5 minutes (approx. 450 yards via How Lane)

The Vibe: Lively, eccentric, and great for evening entertainment.

Our Unique Take:
Situated just slightly further down toward How Lane, The Peak Hotel styles itself as the area’s eccentric alehouse. It has a brilliant, bustling local vibe and serves up traditional homemade food with a modern twist. If you are looking for evening entertainment after a quiet day on the hills, this is the place to be regularly hosting weekly pub quizzes, acoustic jam nights, and live performances from local Peak District artists.

They have recently updated the menu to include American style, large plates and slow cooked meats, worth a try after a long walk!

Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese

Walking time from Buttercup Cottage: 6 minutes (approx. 500 yards on How Lane)

The Vibe: Unspoiled history and an authentic local crowd.

Our Unique Take:
Located on the edge of the village heading toward Hope, this traditional inn is a true firm favourite with the Castleton locals. It retains an authentic, un-commercialised village pub feel with a fantastic rotational selection of regional real ales. There is a wide range menu served in both the pub and restaurant areas, the pizza’s are great and very reasonable. They have just opened a day café, not personally been for the cafe experience but the cake stand is amazing, huge individual carrot cakes for £2.50!

The Swiss Tap

Walking time from Buttercup Cottage: 5 minutes (approx. 450 yards on How Lane)

The Vibe: A modern sports bar with historic roots and fantastic value.

Our Unique Take:

Known locally as the Swiss Cottage it’s a sports bar which would be perfect for the World Cup, (at the time of writing this!). Built originally by a Swiss couple hoping to capitalize on a railway line that never arrived, it now serves as a vibrant, incredibly welcoming village bar. It is widely celebrated as one of the most affordable and friendly spots in town, offering a great range of Yorkshire cask ales, premium lagers, and an extensive gin selection. If you want a fresh burger or pizza, a casual game of board games on a rainy day, or a lively spot to catch Sky & TNT Sports on the big screen, this is a fantastic pitstop just down the road and right next to the wine shop!
